[In red ink] Rec. Sept. 14/32

Dear Sir
Through Divine mercy we arrived here on Tuesday 1st May after a passage of nine weeks from the Cape, during which we had frequent gales attended with great danger. We are now being hospitably entertained at the house of the Revd R[ichar]d Hill.[25] We expected to wait on his Excellency the Governor today but his absence from town has necessarily deferr’d our interview with him until next week. The extracts &c with the letter to the Revd Secretary have been laid before the Governor, but as he has not recd any official dispatches from home authorising him to pay the money it is questionable whether he will feel himself at liberty to do so, (for almost the first question I was asked was have you dispatches for the Governor?) You will see how needful it is for the proper documents to be immediately forwarded by or from the Secretary of State. Mr Matthews[26] is already at New Zealand. I should have been extremely

happy in having him as a fellow labourer with me on this station (as well as Br Handt) we expected it all the time we were at the Institution together & we fostered the idea which increased our detachment &c. Mr Handt has been waiting here in Sydney for my arrival in great suspense, as it was reported we were lost.[27] The language I have been learning is not worth a straw. Mr Threlkeld says so himself. It is remarkable he has publish’d the Gospel of St Luke in the Aboriginal language & he cannot converse with the natives in it. I shall (DV) send you further particulars by the Malina Capt. Wilson, which will sail in a few days. I was anxious to embrace this opportunity knowing you will feel some doubts as to our safe arrival. I hope & trust that both in this & every other department the blessing of God will rest upon all engaged in the service of the Society. With Xtn regards to the Committee, to my very dr & highly valuable Principal, & to yourself.

I remain
Yours faithfully
Wm Watson
