Sydney, 25 June 1842

Reverend Sir
I had two principal motives for not replying immediately to your first communication relative to the unhappy misconduct of Mr Porter. In the present constitution of the mission I have really no power or authority to interfere with the conduct of any of the lay members however scandalous or injurious to the credit of religion it may be: and secondly and principally I did found a hope upon some expressions in your Letter that Mr Porter had seen the errors of his way, and would by contrition and amendment place it in my power to dispense with any notice of his past immorality. Your subsequent communication of 13th instant

had dissipated that expectation: and I had therefore transmitted Your Report to the C.M.S. acquainting them that I should, as acting on their behalf, take steps for the removal from all connection with the Mission, an individual who had so misconducted himself as to retard rather than forward the sacred purpose which his employer trust him to take part in. Conformably with this view, I shall submit to the attention of the Governor the statements received from you attaching so much censure to Mr Porter: and in communicating this my intention to the latter you will acquaint him that if he is desirous of urging any thing in his own defence he is at liberty to do so, and whatever he may have to urge will be impartially considered before any public measures are resorted to by which his interests may be affected.
But relying on the certainty of you intelligence, I can scarcely expect that any explanation or assurance can be afforded by Mr Porter as would justify his retention in the service of the Church Missionary Society. With a view therefore to his apprehended removal

it will be proper that measures be at once taken to protect the interests of the Society from injury. You will therefore require from Mr Porter a return of the live and dead stock on hand belonging to the C.M.S as well as of all Stores, Implements, Materials and Property of what kind soever, so belonging, now in his charge. Also a correct account of monies received or expended by him on behalf of the society for the purposes of the Mission: and of the Balance if any, now in his hands. These accounts must be made up and certified to the 30th Instant, and you will transmit them to me with as little delay as possible: stating by the same opportunity, your own views as to the mode in which the agricultural concerns of the Establishment can be best carried on. (I assume so as not entail loss or expense upon the society) in the probably event of Mr. Porter's ceasing to hold the charge. In the mean time as a matter of precaution I have requested Messrs Campbell and Co. not to make any advances to the credit of W. Porter without a previous notification to me.

I remain etc.
