WOLLOMBI PUBLIC SCHOOL
April 1852. John Rubie, the school teacher at Wollombi, advised the State
National Schools Board that on 13th April 1852, he had received the following
school materials:-
24 Volumes of National Schools Books
24 Scripture Lessons
2 Sets of Reading and Spelling Tablets
1 Register Book
1 Daily Report Book
1 Map of the World
12 Class Rolls
4 Sheets Scripture Maxims
Mr. Rubie followed this acknowledgement with a request dated 26th April 1852,
for the following supplies:-
30 Slates
100 Slate Pencils
24 Class Books
12 Geography Books
12 Grammar Books
12 Arithmetic Books
1 Box Pens
6 Bottles Ink
Under Appendix "B" of the Department of Public Instruction 1852
Annual Report headed 'Schools and Attendances', No. 52 on the list shows:-
"Wollombi 15 boys, 28 girls on roll.
NOTE: School not opened for whole year".
During the early part of 1853, more local differences broke out in
Wollombi. Teacher John Rubie reported to his superiors that he was invol~ed
in some uncomfortable situations. Partly because he had changed his banking
arrangements from Michael Byrne's business to a new Sydney Bank Branch recently
opened in Wollombi, Rubie had received an ultimatum that he would have cause
