and in the meantime Sheddens Hall should again be hired. The Department
accepted both recommendations and as the first step, Sheddens Hall was once
more rented, this time at an increased fee of £1.0.0. ($2.00) per week.
On 12th February 1908, the contractor who built the first school,
Mr. Henry Y. Russell, was again successful with his tender of £897.10.0.
($1,795.00) for extensions and additions to the Weston Primary School. The
Government Architect had estimated the costs of the proposed alterations to
be £1,115.0.0. ($2,230.00). The new alterations were completed late in November
1903 and the rental of Shedden's Hall was terminated in December 1908.
Puring this year '1908', the Education Department had been requested
to make their hired premises 'Shedden's Hall' available for a number of important
local social events.
On Saturday 26th February 1908, the Hall was engaged by Mr. Jim Garratt
of the Criterion Hotel, to celebrate the wedding of his son Arthur Garratt to
Miss Frame of Weston. On 12th March 1908, Walter Lunn, colliery clerk of Hebburn
Colliery arranged a 'send-off' to C.M. Goddard, the colliery electrician.
On 19th March 1908, Rev. C.G. Walkom applied to use Shedden's Hall for Church
ser?ices each Sunday. He indicated in his application that he had used the
Hall for Church purposes for varying periods prior to this recent Departmental
An 'Evening School' was established on 2nd April 1909, under the
guidance of the Primary School Principal, Mr. J. McKay. This had followed
a petition to the Department of Public Instruction, signed by the following
ele~en (11) persons:-
