ROTHBURY NORTH SCHOOL
When the school enrolment had reached sixty seven (67) pupils
as at 10th May 1923, and the Department of Education had not erected a school
on the site which had been donated, fifty nine (59) families signed a
petition seeking the construction of a new school and a teacher's residence.
The Education Department acceded to the petition. On 22nd August 1923, the
Department called for separate tenders for the erection of both a school and
a residence.
For the school, there were eight (8) tenders, ranging from £965.0.0
($1 ,930.00) to £1 ,600.0.0 ($3,200.00). The successful contractor was H.F.
Boyle of William Street East Maitland, at a contract price of £965.0.0
($1 ,930.00). He completed the school ready for occupancy on 26th June 1924.
The teacher's residence construction attracted three (3) tenders.
The design was the Departme~t's Stock Plan No. 5. The prices were from
£935.0.0 ($1 ,870.00) to £1, 135.3.6 ($2,270.36). The successful contractors
were T. Simpson and Son of Singleton. The residence was completed and ready
for occupancy on 22nd August 1924.
The Education Department's works staff, on 20th December 1940, made
a repaint which was estima ted to have cost £219.9.8 ($438.98). Some
remodelling repairs and repainting were completed on 4th July 1949 and cost
£697.2.2 ($1 ,384.22). Further maintenance repairs and repaint on 5th April
1967 were assessed at £1 ,982.10.0 ($3,965.00).
Electric power was connected to the Rothbury North school by R.
James, electrical contractor, on 13th March 1946. His quote had been £18.15.0
($37.50).
When the Hunter District Water Board connected its town water mains
to the Ro thbu ry North towns~ip early in 1949, a service was made to the
school on authority of O rd e~ No . N3061. The work was completed on 27th April
1949 at a cost of £40.0.8 ($30.08).
