A petition from Neath residents, dated 13th September 1924, sought
the erection of a teacher's residence. This had been forwarded by the then
Secretary, Mr. R. Whitson of Neath Citizens Association. The request was
declined, as was a second request made on 3rd August 1925.
An application was made on 16th July 1934, to have electric lighting
installed to the school. The request was denied.
The Department of Education's paint and repair staff completed
repainting the school on 3rd March 1936. £160.15.9. ($321.59) i~ the cost
shown for the work done.
Lots 1, 2 and J, Section 19, Parish of Cessnock, an area of one (1)
rood twenty seven (27) perches, was acquired by resumption and is dedicated
in Government Gazette dated 21st November 1947. The records do not show who
built the timber-framed asbestos clad residence, nor the cost of its construction.
When pupil enrolments dropped, Neath Public School was closed in
December 1971, and the school residence was vacated. The Education Department
sold the residence to Certina Investments on 15th June 1973. The school building
still remains and has been used by a number of organizations over 'the following
years. The Neath School grounds are being investigated for sub-division in
the 1983 programme.
