Mr. P. Board, Under-Secretary, Department of Education, on 18th
August 1916, in a letter to Mr. Turner, Secretary of Neath Progress Association,
advised that tenders for a new school building at Neath, which will provide
accommodation for 100 children, will close on 24th August 1916.
When plans were prepared, the Government Architect estimated a con-
struction price of £572.0.0. ($1,144.00). Five (5) tenders were received
ranging from £593.15.0. ($1,187.50) to £865.0.0. ($1,730.00). The successful
contractor was F.W. Morgan of Lewis Street Maryville, with his quote of £593.15.0.
($1,187.50). He also offered a separate tender of £65.0.0. ($130.00) to alter
the existing old school by dividing it into two (2) clas~rooms, each twenty
two (22) feet by twenty two (22) feet, a hat lobby twenty one (21) feet by eight
(8) feet and a verandah twenty three (23) feet by eight (8) feet. The new
school was completed and ready for occupation on 5th March 1917. The school
was officially opened on Saturday 3rd March 1917, by Mr. William Kearsley, M.L.A.
New school furniture was supplied by the Department, as under:-

10 Forms
28 Infant Desks
2 Pointers
1 Large Table
1 Medium Table
1 Small Table
3 Chairs
2 Presses.
Minor repairs had been made by the Education Department paint and
repair staff in March 1925. This work was estimated to have cost £69.4.8.
($138.48). Major repairs and the erection of a weathershed were co~pleted
on 29th June 1926. This project was assessed at £220.12.6. ($441.20) and
was again completed by the Education Department's paint and repair staff.
This section repainted the school on 9th September 1926, with the ccsts being
shown as £112.0.0. ($224.00).
