Writing a summary: General format
A summary simply answers the question: "What is the writer stating?"
Summaries comprise an overview of the writer's message and must:
- Be written in your own words
- Avoid including unnecessary detail
- Retain the original meaning and emphasis of the writer
- Not offer any critical analysis of the writer's message.
Generally, a summary is written in a single paragraph; although, long and/or complex texts may require more than one paragraph.
