Writing a summary of a paragraph
One way to make sure you include the important parts of the writer’s message is to read the paragraph carefully, then:
- Identify the topic sentence
- note key words or terms and phrases
- note supporting phrases and clauses
- Identify supporting sentences
- note the use of logical sequencing
- Identify the concluding sentence
- note the use of any strategy for making the case
- note the use of any strategy for making the case
Write the summary using your own words to identify the argument and main supporting points, logical sequencing, and conclusion offered by the writer. Unless you are directed otherwise, do not offer comment on the validity of the argument or ability of the writer.
