Writing a summary of an article, chapter or book
One way to make sure you include the important parts of the writer's message is to read the text carefully, then:
- Identify the thesis argument
- note key words and phrases in the introduction
- note supporting arguments in the introduction
- Identify supporting paragraphs
- note the use of logical sequencing
- Identify the concluding sentence
- note the use of any strategy for making the case
- note the use of any strategy for making the case
Using your own words, briefly state the main argument and supporting points, strategy for logically sequencing the points, and the conclusion offered by the writer. Unless you are directed otherwise, do not offer comment on the validity of the argument or ability of the writer.
