Writing a critical review: General format

Your school may have different requirements for the content and layout of critical reviews, depending on the type of material and format. Check your assignment instructions for details.

Generally, a critical review of a source comprises four distinct but connected parts that you must complete before you writing your review:

  1. Bibliographic information
  2. A summary of the key points
  3. An analysis of the author’s treatment of the key points
  4. Evaluation and reflection.
