You need to identify the main argument and supporting evidence provided in the source.
Tips for identifying the key points:
- Read the abstract, introduction or summary of the source for an overview of the subject and arguments being presented.
- Scan the article or book chapter to gain an overview of the subject matter and what the author is trying to convey.
- Read the source again. This time highlight the main points. Note the subject matter, the arguments the author is making and what evidence the
- Author is providing to validate their arguments.
- What is your initial response to reading the source? Do you agree or disagree? Why? make a note of your thoughts.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Is the tone of the source appropriate for its intended audience?
- Does the information presented flow logically?
- Are there illustrations or graphs to support the information provided? Did they assist your understanding of the information?
- How thorough is the information presented?
- Does the author raise any new ideas or make new claims?
- Is there a list of references at the end? Are they recent?
