You can hold your reader's attention by the clarity of your proposition and the thoroughness in the way you show how you intend to prove your case. To achieve maximum impact, your introduction needs to convince your reader that you have:

 

Interpreted the question correctly
Demonstrated a broad understanding of the issue
Formed a sound argument
Provided appropriate supporting evidence
Proved your case
