* 4 November - James Stephen produces a proposal to solicit some "pecuniary encouragement" from the NSW Colonial Treasury for missionary activity, suggesting offers be made to the Methodists, the Moravians or the Quakers. Sir George Murray and Under Secretary Horace Twiss back the proposal on the proviso that the Anglican CMS be invited into the scheme

* February 4 - In NSW, the new Archdeacon of NSW, William Grant Broughton, delivers his charge to the clergy, demanding that “because of her advantageous position in the colony, the Church Of England should strive to be the Mother of missionaries to the native population”.
* February 18 - In London, a general plan emerges to employ two CMS missionaries to work among Aborigines on the frontier of settlement in NSW, with £500 to be provided annually by the NSW governmen
