This land ( 3 roods 7~ perches D.P. 8027) had been purchased from the Hunter
Valley Dairy Company in early 1975. Two vertical sewerage pumps raised the
sullage to flow into the ordinary Branxton gravitational scheme. These two
pumps were Layne and Bowler three stage type, model 4RH and had cost $506.00.
These pumps operated at 2900 revolutions per minute to produce fifty-five (55)
gallons per minute for a forty-two (42') feet lift. The pumps were driven by
two one anda half H.P. Crompton Parkinson "E.F.C." type electric motors, which
also ran at 2900 revolutions per minute.
The 1926 Heddon Greta booster pump was replaced in August 1972. The
replacement pump was also secondhand. It was purchased new in 1942, for
£2580.0.0 ($5160.00) it was transferred from Sandgate to Heddon Greta and was
transferred to Heddon Greta. The pump was a "Thompson" single stage centrifugal
type. It operated at 1460 revolutions per minute which produced four thousand
two hundred (4200) gallons per minute for a ninety (90') feet lift. The pump
was driven by an Australian General Electric Company "Metro" type squirrel
caged 160 H.P. motor (415 Volts, 3 Phase, 50 cycles).
A further extension of sewerage reticulation at Abermain was commenced
on 4th March, 1974. This was a continuation of the simple gravity system.
When completed on 23rd May, 1975, almost 2500 metres of additional carrier mains
and reticulation pipes had been laid. Excavation conditions had been
extremely difficult because of underground springs in the fine sand stratum. Ball
cleaning of completed sewer lines had been necessary to remove the fine sand
which had infiltrated during the construction work.
The Branxton-Greta-North Rothbury water reticulation system introduced
in 1948 required some boosting to meet the demand. In December 1964 a
portable electric booster pump was installed in Greta. This was situated on
Lot 2, corner of Wyndham and Greta Streets, Greta being part of portion No. 191,
Parish of Branxton (D.P. 212371). The land was acquired by purchase from Jones
Nominees development Company on the 30th June, 1962. This small pump was
second-hand and had originally been purchased for use on the H.D.W.B. Project at
New Lambton and was then transferred to Carrington Station. The pump was a
"Harland" single stage pump which had a two and a half (2~") inch suction
movement and a three (3") drive that produced 150 gallons per minute for a 135
feet lift. This pump was driven by a fifteen (15) H.P. Crompton Parkinson electric
motor. This small boosting station was strengthened by a larger pump in .
February, 1975. A "Brittons" pump was purchased by the Water Board in September
1927 at a cost of £145.0.0 ($290.00) for use in the Tenambit boosting station,
this pump was transferred to the Greta boosting station in 1975.
