BUCHANAN S CH0 0 L
The start of a school at Buchanan appears somewhat hazy and
confusing in the Education Department records. The Department of Public
Instruction 1851 Annual Report shows:-
(A) Under a heading - 'List of Schools Already Established'
amongst other schools named appears 'Buchanan'.
(B) Under a heading - 'School Sites'; amongst others
named appears: -
Buchanan - School site granted by Government.
Schoolhouse erected thereon by Mr. Secombe.
(C) Under a section headed - 'Teachers at Work and Salary'
amongst other entries appears:-
SCHOOL TEP.CHER COMMENCING DATE SALARY
PER ANNUM
Buchc.nan Stephen Ryan 12th May 1850 £40.0.0
(D) Unde~ a section headed - 'Years Attendance'; runongst
othe~ schools listed appears:-
SCHOOL ENROLMENT ATTEiWING
Buchanan 26 boys and 19 girls 45 pupils
The site is said to have been on the west side of Wallis Creek
and almost due east of the present site of Kurri. A school site of one (1)
acre is shown on the 1904 Parish map of Stanford, being part of Portion
No. 50 of ten (10) acres shown in the name of Hugh Morgan. This Parish
map shows the existence of an earlier road or track linking Mulbring
village and Maitland township. This school site would have fronted that
old road. Portion of that old road s tHl exists as "Averys Lane" and
which turns off from tr..::: pr-:sen t Kurri to Newcastle Road.
