later when the bus company raised its transport charge, the Education
Department declined to carry the Pelton Village School Travel Subsidy.
However, with some intervention by local Parliamentarians and the
Local Government Council, the Education Department again agreed to
carry the subsidy. The matter was one for controversy until 4th July
1939, when the Education Department repudiated its earlier arrangements.
Subsequently, the Education Department met school travel subsidies
in many areas, subject to 'standard' conditions.
Another move was made for the erection of an additional
weathershed on 10th November 1939. Again it was denied. The inspector's
report shows that the school accommodation at that time, provided
nine (9) rooms for six (6) classes. Above the classes needs, there
was one (1 l room for reading, one (1 l room for sewing and one room
spare. The school had two (2) weathersheds, both fifteen (15) feet
by twelve (12) feet, plus the verandah space. For these reasons,
the application for the additional weathershed was denied.
