CESSNOCK WEST SCHOOL

of 15 Sparke Street, Waratah, successfully tendered a price of £222.0.0
($444.00) for the construction of a weathershed. On 31st August 1928,
the weathershed was completed.

                Between 1929 and 1931, the period of the 'Great Depression',
N.S.W. Government Un-Employed Relief Council provided funds to create
work and as a result, Cessnock West School gained additional accommodation.
Two extra class rooms were provided for infant classes and two extra class
rooms for the main primary school. The corridors on each floor were re-
newed. An additional hat lobby was also built. The standard for
accommodation was calculated at forty-eight (48) pupils to each classroom.
At this time, there were twenty (20) teachers at the school. New dual
desks were also supplied. The total cost of the additions and renovations
were calculated at £3,336.0.0 ($6,672.00).

                Cessnock West School was connected to the sewerage mains of
the Hunter District Water Board on 23rd May 1934. Cost had been £597.19.0
($1 ,195.90). The same year, 1934, the Education Department's repair
staff made some improvements and did some repainting to Cessnock West.
The value of these works was assessed at £549.0.0 ($1 ,098.00). The
Depar~~ent's records show the apportionment of costs as follows:-

Residence  £107.0.0   ($214.00)
Fencing    £16.0.0    ($32.00)
Grounds    £37.0.0    ($74.00)

                Two primary classes were housed in two vacant classrooms in
the infants school on 9th March 1938, to allow accommodation for the primary
school library.

                On 24th January 1941, the Education Department's paint and
rep2ir staff completed repairs and renovations estimated to have cost
£6~~-~-7 ($1 ,298.47). Improvements and repairs by this section of the
De~2rtment were finished on 8th October 1946 and such work was valued
at £1 ,628.0.3 ($3,256.03). The school received a re-paint internally
