Using direct quotations appropriately

A direct quotation uses the exact words of an author's work within your essay or assignment. Direct quotations are usually limited to a statement, phrase or short section of work and should be used sparingly.

If you are intending to quote from a source, ensure that you accurately record the words in your notes, together with the citation details of the original source.

You should also ensure that you identify the words as a quote in your note-taking, by placing quotation marks around the words. This will ensure that you do not plagiarise them unintentionally at a later date.
