Features of scholarly journals
Articles are:
- Written by an expert or researcher in the discipline. Author credentials are usually listed at the beginning of an article
usually preceeded by an abstract - Generally assume some knowledge of the discipline by the reader
- Contain little or no background information, and fewer images than popular journals
- Referenced with extensive bibliographies
- Generally longer than magazine and popular journal articles
- Language - uses technical language and discipline specific jargon
- Usually published by scholarly or university presses, research or professional organisations
- Peer reviewed, with editorial board details included in each issue
- Contain few or no advertisements - if included they are usually limited to advertising upcoming conferences, new books
- Frequency - daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly
