          STANFORD MERTHYR SCHOOL

26th October 1927, were authorised to erect the school in accordance with
their quote of £990.0.0 ($1 ,980.00). The school was completed on 17th
December 1927 and was ready for occupancy with the start of the 1928 year.

                New school furniture was supplied on 21st November 1927 from the
Education Department Furniture Workshops. This consisted of:-

Ten (10)        Large infants dual desks
Ten (10)        Small infants dual desks
One (1)         Table "B" class
Two (2)         Chairs.

Some minor improvements were made by the Department of Education repair
and paint staff on 25th February 1929. These improvements were assessed
as costing £13.10.6 ($27.06). On 12th February 1930, the same works section
erected a post and wire fence around the school grounds. The work was
estimated to cost £37.6.8 ($74.68).

                A reminder of the proximity of some coal mine workings to the
surface, particularly in this regicn, was clearly demonstrated by a
subsidence in the playground on 26th June 1936. This was a depression some
twenty (20) feet by twelve (12) feet ·.vrJ::h formed about two hundred and sixty
(260) feet from the school buildings.

                In June 1955, the Education Department's work staff made general
renovations to the Stanford Merthyr schcol. The Department's architect
had estimated that the renovations would cost £2,850.0.0 ($5,700.00). The
actual work perfomed was valued at £2,581 .16.0 ($5,163.60).
