However, the Department retained its decision and the Paynes Crossing School
was closed on 20th May 1932.
On 19th August 1932, Paynes Crossing School opened as a subsidised ยท"
school with teacher M. Munro in charge. On 20th October 1933, he too vacated
the position. On 19th January 1934, F.J. Fletcher opened a subsidised school.
He paid 2/6d. ($0.26) per week rental for the old school residence and in
addition, he was required to pay rates. On 3rd January 1935, G.R. Price took
over the subsidised school. He also ran a poultry farm on the school grounds.
Mr. Price gave up his subsidised school in December 1937.
During 1939, F.J. Fletcher took over the school ground site and the
Reserve Land under a Lands Board Permissive Occupancy Tenancy. During 1948,
Mr. Fletcher converted his rented land to his own freehold by purchasing .the
old school building, its site and the school reserve.
