Inspector W. Wilkins recommended to his s·uperiors at the National
Board of Education that this new Ellalong School should be accepted as
a National School. The Local Committee promised to provide:-
Six (6) Cedar Desks
Six (6) Cedar Forms
One (1 ) Book Press
One (1 ) Blackboard
One (1 ) Map
Plus slates, pencils, pens, ink and chalk.
On behalf of the National Board of Education, Inspector Wilkins promised
that his Department would supply:-
24 First Book of Lessons
12 Second Book of Lessons
12 Third Book o: Lessons
12 Sequels
12 Small Arithr.letic Books
6 Geography Books
6 English Grammar Books
English Dictionary.
The 1858 Annual Repor~ of the Department of Public Instruction
at Page No. 1, lists thirty eight (38) schools opening during 1858, No.
16 was Ellalong. In the same report at Page No. 17, Ellalong School is
amongst the sixty six (66) non-vested schools listed as receiving "Aid"
during that year. Amongst the Education Department's r.ecords on "Staff, ·
Past and Present", the following entry is shown:-
"Andrew J. Mc Laren appointed to
Ellalong National School on 14th June 1858".
