Oral stories, artworks and other creations by Indigenous cultures are difficult to protect under copyright law.
The Australian government is reviewing copyright law with regard to Indigenous cultural and intellectual property.
Respecting Indigenous copyright
Respecting Indigenous cultural and intellectual property includes:
- Not copying or reproducing indigenous designs, symbols or artistic styles without permission.
- Understanding that Indigenous material such as artworks, songs, oral stories or other creations belong to Indigenous culture and the integrity of such material should be maintained.
- Indigenous peoples have the right to be attributed as the author and owner of cultural and intellectual property.
