Illegally obtaining account numbers and passwords
Some unscrupulous people may try to obtain your personal information by deception.
This can occur in the form of:
- People attempting to hack into computer systems. At University you will probably need to create a number of passwords in order to access various systems. A general guide for creating passwords is to use a combination of letters and numbers and to change your password regularly.
- Fraudulent emails from people posing as your bank who attempt to obtain your account numbers and/or passwords. These emails direct you to click on a link that will take you to a website that appears identical to the legitimate website owned by your bank. A general guide to assist you is that banks never send email asking for account numbers or passwords. If you receive an email and you are unsure, phone your bank for verification.
