2. Table of contents
The table of contents provides a guide to the location of specific pieces of information in your report. Therefore, take great care to ensure that page numbers cited in the table of contents are correct.
Your Table of Contents should:
- appear on a separate page
- include headings and sub-headings, and that these reflect the relationship between the two
- include page numbers clearly placed alongside the headings and sub-headings
- use a corresponding numbering system to that used in the text of your report.
The style guide for writing in your discipline should provide guidelines for using indents or a numbering system, or both. Check with your lecturer if you are unsure about which style to use for headings and sub-headings.
