5. Literature review

 

Few investigations or studies can be undertaken without reference to findings of prior studies or the evidence supporting existing practices.

 

Reviews of literature are important because the general purpose of any research or investigation is to increase understanding and extend knowledge. This is achieved most efficiently by building on work already completed.

 

In addition to supporting the content of your work, a review of literature on similar investigations can also provide you with established and academically acceptable methods for collecting and analysing data.
