4. Introduction
The introduction should introduce your reader to the subject and structure of your report.
Although the detail may vary according to the depth of the investigation, the introduction section should also include a brief history of the issues being investigated. In some cases, this history may take the form of a review of published literature on the topic. Some reports include a short literature review in the introduction, while others have a separate section. The format is likely to depend on the requirements of the assignment and guidelines provided by your lecturer.
Your introduction should also include:
- Reason for undertaking the investigation
- Broad aim of your investigation
- Specific objectives of your investigation
- Statement about the scope or limitations of the investigation.
If you cannot state the aim in a single sentence then it is probable that you are confused about the purpose of the investigation and you should rethink what you are trying to achieve.
